When you have a kid at home, blogging could be rough. It takes time and your kid need time too. If you are working full-time it can even be tougher. You will need some trick to blog with a kid and have time for everything.
I am a full-time working, a dad with one kid and another in the making off. So I need to create some moment to write some article for the blog and sometimes they can be tough to find and sometimes you need to be creative to make some.
Choose your blogging strategies
The first step would be to choose your blogging strategies. Who you are talking to, how many posts by week/month you want, the format of this article and etc. You need to set these if you want to be productive when you have the time to be. With kids, you will not get a lot of time so use them as much as you can to write and achieve your goal.
Make smaller task
Brake every big task in a smaller task. These will permit you to use small time window to complete something and be productive. Do you have 15 minutes? Write the outline of a post. Do you have 30 minutes? Take these outline and write the article. This way you have used 2-time windows to complete an article without losing your idea you have in mind.
That’s why you should make smaller task so you can complete your idea before having to do something else.
Write while the kid takes a nap
Nap is the best time to write your post or manage your blog with a kid. Using the nap is a sure way to have the time you need to write alone a blog post. Make yourself a coffee, start some music and write. Also, since the nap time is in the afternoon, your head is not asleep and you can think easily on what to write.
Write multiple articles and schedule them.
Try to keep some articles written ahead of the time you publish so that way if you don’t have the time or something happen and can’t write for a week, you have some post scheduled to go out and you will not lose your reader. That help also for your blog stats and your moral so you are not losing views for the time you’ve not write and it’s easier to keep blogging if you have the moral and see nothing happen.
Personally, I’m trying to keep 3 months ahead of post scheduled so I have time to take a vacation, take a break in case of blog burn-out or take time for my kid when he needs it.
Use your cell phone to manage your social media
Every social media have a mobile app that can be used easily. Make sure you select one or two social media and market your blog on it while you are looking the kids. Don’t overuse your cellphone in a way that your kid will only remember his dad or mom doing this and not playing with them. You can always find the great mix between the twos.
Also, use automation like Tailwind and smarterqueue to post your marketing pin and tweet for your blog post. These tools are a huge time saving and make your social media follower growth easily without your interaction.
Get up earlier or go later to bed
You can blog when your kid sleep. You could set your alarm earlier in the morning or go to bed later in the night and use that time to blog. I know it’s not easy to get up earlier but if you make it a daily thing, it’s your new routine and you will not have any trouble to do it. Just like when you start a new job and need to get up to go work.
Personally, I’m going later to bed than my wife and my son so I prefer to write at night. My head seems to be more clear than in the morning. Also, my kid has some trouble at night and keep waking up for nothing when I am not with him so I can write with my laptop in his room and he keeps sleeping while I am typing for my blog. So that’s one of the way I use to blog with a kid.
Close the TV
Are you listening to the tv? A small TV show of 30 minutes takes you away from writing for 30 minutes. Close the tv for a night by week and you have 30 minutes more to write.
These tips are great but it’s important to remember, your kid will only be young one time so be sure to keep time with him before it’s too late. It’s impossible to change the past so it’s important to make the good decision. Blogging will still be there in couple year so if you can’t blog with a kid, it’s not the end of the world but at least you will have a great souvenir with your kid.
